Fire Permits: What You Need to Know

Fire permits are required for businesses and individuals who need to use fire for work or specific activities during periods of fire restrictions or on days of Total Fire Ban (TFB). These permits provide an exemption from fire restriction laws but come with strict conditions to ensure safety.

If you need to use fire in the open air during the Fire Danger Period or on a Total Fire Ban day, a permit may be necessary.

To determine if you need a permit and to apply, visit the Fire Permits Victoria website for all the details and guidelines. Stay informed and help protect our community.

Prepare your property early

Before the fire season, take steps to prepare your property, such as:

  • Creating fuel breaks around your property and assets.

  • Reducing vegetation and clearing gutters.

  • Update tour bushfire emergency plan

Proper preparation can significantly reduce the risk of fire impacting your property.

Understand Fire Behaviour Index (FBI)

Regularly check the daily FBI, which indicates the potential fire risk. This information is available on the Vic Emergency website or App and the CFA website. Knowing the FBI helps in making informed decisions about safety measures.

Stay Informed

Familiarise yourself with the three levels of fire warnings:

  • Advice: An incident is occurring; stay informed and monitor conditions.

  • Watch and Act: An emergency is developing nearby; take action to protect yourself.

  • Emergency Warning: You are in imminent danger; take immediate action.

These warnings are issued when a fire has started and you need to take action.
